To escape from Bulgarin's wrath, as well as knowing that one of the three survivors of his unit lived in Liberty City, along with his cousin Roman, who claimed was having success and was living in luxury and wealth, Niko decided to travel to Liberty City, arriving in the year 2008 via a cargo ship called the Platypus. He dedicated the next fifteen years of his life to finding the traitor and found work as a human trafficker for Russian crime lord Ray Bulgarin, until an inccident led to the loss of the merchandise. He comes from Eastern Europe, where he fought in the Yugoslav Wars, during which one of his unit members sold out the rest of the unit, resulting in the death of almost all its members, save for three, including Niko.
